Memorial stone was laid at the place of the future Cathedral Mosque in Kazan

A solemn ceremony of laying the memorial stone at the construction site of the Cathedral Mosque for 10000 worshippers was held today in Kazan.

The ceremony was held as a part of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria. The initiator of the construction was the Muslim community of the Republic of Tatarstan, represented by the Muslim Spiritual Board of the Republic on the eve of the celebration of the anniversary date.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin, State Counsellor of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, as well as representatives of the Islamic religious leaders and hundreds of Muslims, including foreign guests.

About a thousand people took part in a public prayer which was performed before the stone laying ceremony.
