220 years later: the most famous Kazan edition in the world – Qur’an “Kazan Basmasy” was printed for the first time in modern mushaf format

February 27
The calling card of the Tatar ummah is the world-famous edition of the Qur’an under the title “Kazan Basmasy.” It was printed in 1803 in the Asian Printing House in Kazan; for the first time after updating and bringing it to modern printing and theological standards, it was published again in classic mushaf format. It is noteworthy that the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan released the long-awaited Tatar-Muslim bestseller in the year of the 220th anniversary of “Kazan Basmasy”, and as part of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria. It should be recalled that the pre-revolutionary Kazan edition of “Kazan Basmasy” went down in history as the first printed Qur’an that received theological recognition in the Muslim world and corresponded to the Ar-Rasm Al-Usmani standard.  Moreover, the edition has gained worldwide fame, thanks to its unique font.
The updated printed mushaf “Kazan Basmasy” became the final stage in the work of DUM RT on the revival of Russian traditions of koran printing. For this purpose, in 2021, a unique computer font was developed based on an authentic typographic impression of “Kazan Basmasy.” Modern computer symbols have not only preserved the authentic historical appearance of the Kazan Qur’an font, but also opened up new feasibility for koran printing and book printing.
Then, in 2022, the specialists of DUM RT typed the text of Qur’an anew using a recreated modern computer font, taking into account the comments of Shigabutdin Mardzhani in the book “Fawaid al-Muhimma” and Musa Bigiev in the book “Tashih rasmi Hat”, and also brought it into line with modern international standards.
In the Year of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria, during the main celebrations in Tatarstan, the electronic version of the updated “Kazan Basmasy” and the computer font of the same name were posted on the DUM RT website for free download to everyone. In total, about 5 thousand downloads were recorded from the muftiat’s resource.
Now, in the Year of National Cultures and Traditions announced in Tatarstan, Khuzur Publishing House of DUM RT has printed “Kazan Basmasy”  with the participation of the Foundation for the Support of Islamic Culture, Science and Education in the form of a mushaf in high print quality, in easy A5+ format, on design paper and with artwork for reading with pleasure. The book ‘s circulation is 3,000 copies.
The updated Qur’an mushaf “Kazan Basmasy” deserves to take an honorable place in the home library of every Muslim family in Russia!
